Thursday's Vice Presidential debate at Washington University began with a few house rules from moderator Gwen Ifill requesting that there be "no cheers, applause, or obscene outbursts." However at UIC's debate watch party, held in the Montgomery Ward Lounge, the rules were a bit different.

Violent crime in Chicago continues unabated this year, with the latest unofficial statistics showing that there were 316 more shootings in the city through August. Through the end of September, there were 392 murders, 50 more than the same time last year.

It's been a year since Planned Parenthood opened a clinic in Aurora, and people on both sides of the abortion debate say they have seen success in that time. Fountains are relatively easy subjects to shoot and can also give you drastically different results depending on the way you take the photo. This shot was taken with a quick shutter to freeze the drops of water in flight - and with the sun just behind the fountain, it created a silhouette and illuminated the streams.

Why are we monogamous? Reloading the question

Touchy Subjects
Monogamy is a curious paradigm, whether we acknowledge its awkwardness or not; and someday, sooner or later, we will all feel its potential to arouse cognitive dissonance. You see, we have inherited a lot of ideas about the purposes or causes for monogamy, and it is clear that many of us are willing to question the motivation behind our "romantic" urges.

Is UIC going green?

I honestly couldn't tell, what with all the stray paper floating around campus and jamming up the escalator in SCE for publicity's sake. Sure, UIC has a bookstore that features a sustainability section and new recycling bins, and the building that the University is currently constructing promises to be "green," but I still see litter lying just about everywhere on campus.

On art and expression for money

I like art, and I like people who encourage true artistic expression. And because of this love for art, I cannot support the efforts of Podmajersky, Incorporated. They are a family-owned real estate business that claims to create a "complete living and working environment focused on quality of life and anchored by the arts, culture and great design.

Can I have some money, mommy?

When you want something and one parent says "no," you always go to the other who will say "yes." Well, last week the House of Representatives and the Senate were Mommy and Daddy to the financial markets. The House said "No" and the Senate was the softy, but the bailout bill has a ways to go.

Understanding the Credit Crisis

What is at stake?
Chances are good that if you have been alive and awake over the past few weeks, you have heard a little bit about the credit crisis and the problems with the economy. Students refer to it as the Apocalypse or the next Great Depression - and it is not hard to see how they draw those conclusions.

Students with Asthma speak out

Getting people to talk about their personal lives can be incredibly difficult. However, when I told people that I wanted to talk with them about their chronic illnesses, many were quick to volunteer their time and stories. I met with people on campus and off; through e-mail, phone calls, and even one memorable instant messaging system.

No place like it

Unbeaten UIC, fans makes Flames Field a first-class atmosphere
Since 2006, UIC soccer has lost just one game at home. Aside from increasingly better talent comprising the UIC squad, players insist the biggest reason for that record is the lift they receive from the ever-loudening, energetic atmosphere at Flames Field.
