An outside report analyzing the financial condition of the University of Illinois is making the rounds around campus. The report, titled "Analysis of the Financial Condition of the University of Illinois System," was written at the request of the American Association of University Professors and the American Federation of Teachers for the United Faculty Organizing Committee at UIC.

Fire in our neighborhood

Walking north on Halsted from UIC, one would be hard-pressed not to notice the charred remains of what was once Costa's Greek Dining and Bar on the corner of Halsted and Van Buren. A fire is believed to have started around 11:45 on the night of Sunday, January 31st and raged until about 9 a.

USG creates representation and student services committee

Last week's meeting opened with a report by Vice President Jamil. Jamil announced a successful meeting with Student Centers Interim Director Booker Suggs. The agenda for the meeting was USG's Gum Removal Campaign. USG has considered the amount of gum stuck to university property rather distressing and has brought it to the attention of the Student Centers Administration.

UIC prides itself on its diversity. But students from the Centers for Diversity are concerned that diversity is going to become a budget cut casualty. A group of students from UIC's Centers for Diversity are planning a protest on Wednesday, February 10th, from 11:30-1PM at University Hall, to show their solidarity with their centers' mission.

Recently, the Supreme Court ruled that it is illegal to restrict corporations from making contributions to electoral candidates. In a split vote, the court found that restricting contributions from corporations is a violation of First Amendment rights. This decision overturns a more than century-old law that limited the amount corporations, unions and other organizations could use to fund political campaigns.

Viva Palestina is a group which sends convoys to break the siege of Gaza and, in their opinion, they "are unwavering in [their] determination to provide medical and humanitarian aid to the people who immediately won [their] hearts with their kindness and strength.

Byron Hurt is the award-winning documentary filmmaker of 'Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes', and on Wednesday, February 3rd he visited UIC to speak about his work's message as part of UIC's Black History Month. Hurt describes his upbringing as a typical American, one in which he played organized sports, earning an athletic scholarship for college.
