Winter weather hit Northwest Indiana early last week, dumping more than a foot of lake-effect snow on the area.

The storms last Tuesday and Thursday left many local school systems with delays and slowed morning and afternoon traffic to a near halt in parts of La Porte and Michigan City.

In 1991, Desert Storm veterans were coming home, and the nation was ready to celebrate the safe return of troops.

A group in Charleston formed to plan a community event for the Fourth of July.

"A lot of parents of Desert Storm veterans got together to have a small celebration that turned into a large celebration," Betty Coffrin, one of the original Red, White and Blue Days committee members, said.

But even as throngs of people scramble to get their hands on their favorite colored Roman Candles, the longest roll of firecrackers they can find, and those forever-classic sparklers, they forget one very important thing: fireworks are not toys and treating them as such can wield severe consequences.
