Will Ferrell and Mark Whalberg immediately draw you into this movie. For one thing, we haven't seen Will Ferrell for quite a long time. On top of that, Mark Wahlberg completes the dynamic duo in a very interesting way - who would ever think of him as "comedic"? Much to my dismay, however, the movie was sub-par. While there were some genuinely hilarious moments, "The Other Guys" never seemed to pick up. I kept waiting for the story to begin, and it just kept drudging aimlessly forward. Strike two was the lack of believable characters. The main objective in comedy is to get laughs. These characters, however, weren't funny. They made you painfully aware that they were "trying" to make jokes, and once that's detected, the veil of spontaneity disappears.
The movie starts by introducing cops Christopher Danson (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) and P.K. Highsmith (Samuel L. Jackson) as two super-cops adored by everyone on the force. Once they are killed by spontaneously deciding to jump off a building (That's when I first started shaking my head) Detectives Allen Gamble (Will Ferrell) and Terry Hoitz (Mark Wahlberg) set out to prove their ability to be the next "super-cops."
Unfortunately, they never become super-cops, rather they prove their stupidity time and time again. There are some random appearances by Derek Jeter, Eva Mendes (who plays Will Ferrell's wife in a couple strangely erotic scenes) and a shoddy performance by Michael Keaton as the Captain of Police. Perhaps Michael should go back into retirement – or was he even retired? His downright disastrous performance was the straw that broke the camel's back. He had the potential to legitimize the movie with his role as the leader of the police force, but failed miserably. That's strike three against this movie, and it doesn't take a baseball fan to understand what that means.
Overall, Will Ferrell was the only redeeming factor. He had some truly hilarious moments, but they were too far and in-between. With a couple more revisions of the script and a shedding of some extraneous characters, maybe this movie could have been funny. Oh… and a plot too. That would have been really nice.
