Efrain Leon, a leukemia patient at the University of Illinois Medical center, was dependent upon a stem cell transplant to live. His sister, Hilda, provided the matching donor cells, but it would have been impossible without the 120 blood and platelet donors required to make the surgery possible.

The first Gender and Women's Studies course was taught at UIC in 1973 and by the late 1970s, an undergraduate minor was established. UIC is ready to make history again as it launches the GWS major in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The bachelor's degree will be available to students in the fall semester of 2006.

For a week, while most students were catching up on sleep, others, involved in Alternative Spring Break (ASB) and New Life Volunteer Society (NLVS), were in Louisiana and Texas, giving their time in the Hurricane Rita relief effort.
