Illinois Governor Pat Quinn paid a visit to UIC last Tuesday afternoon to address an issue that has been affecting thousands of college students across the state: the recent reduction of funding for the Monetary Award Program (MAP).
Commonly known as MAP grants, the Monetary Award Program is a financial aid program that "provides grants, which do not need to be repaid, to Illinois residents who attend approved Illinois colleges and demonstrate financial need," according to the website www.

The Undergraduate Student government met last week amidst much controversy and debate over the proposed abolishment of "constituencies" in USG. Besides the usual tension that comes with government debates, there was much discomfort in the room over a video posted to the Internet the night before by a former USG member about a current representative.

On Wednesday, September 23rd, University of Illinois President B. Joseph White announced his resignation amidst allegations that he was involved in the much publicized admissions scandal at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana last summer. White, along with other high powered university officials, allegedly admitted students based on their political connections and not their academic qualifications by placing certain applicants into what they referred to as "Category I.

On September 30th, the Future of Chicago lecture series welcomed guest lecturer James Laski, the former Alderman of the 23rd ward of Chicago as well as a former city clerk. Not 30 years into his career as a Chicago politician, he was charged with two counts of bribery and two counts of obstruction of justice and was sentenced to 24 months in a federal penitentiary in Morgantown West Virginia, eleven of which he served.
