On Wednesday, a banana man danced down Halsted Street in the newly reconstructed section of the University Village, handing out smoothies and a healthy new way to eat and drink.

The grand opening celebrations consisted of free smoothies, a dancing banana man, a disc jockey from a local radio station and a line of students out the door.

For some, juice is simply juice. For others, it is a way of life.

The people at Jamba Juice are those others. Jamba, created in the early '90s and formerly known as the Juice Club, has always stood as a beacon to healthy living, while maintaining a strong stance of environmental consciousness.

Until recently, that beacon had only shined on the West Coast. The founders of this franchise now plan to make Chicago their second largest market.

Peter Wink, regional manager of the Chicagoland Jamba Juice and former manager of the Krispy Kreme franchise, wants everyone to love juice as much as he does.

"It's a feel-good product, and we take pride in giving our customers the liquid sunshine to brighten their day," Wink said.

So just how bright is the Jamba franchise planning on making their mark in Chicago?

Wink said in the next few years, the Jamba franchise plans to open at least 30 more stores, many of them in the suburbs of Chicago. At least three of these stores will be within walking distance of the University of Illinois at Chicago.

The first Jamba Juice in the neighborhood, located at 1322 S. Halsted St., had its grand opening last week.

The grand opening has prompted a UIC appreciation day scheduled for Nov. 13, when students will be able to purchase one regular sized smoothie and get one regular size free.

Employees will be welcoming community members to their new location with a smile.
