Navy Pier will be transformed into a magical world from Tuesday through Sunday, with performers milling about on the pier as well as other events and activities planned throughout the week.
This is the first-ever event of its kind at Navy Pier, which is known to most native Chicagoans as a obvious tourist location. This event, though, has appeal for anyone with a sense of humor, be they tourist or native.
On Tuesday, July 12, the festivities will kick off with performances by various magicians and magical acts on stages as well as other performers walking and performing throughout Dock Street, the Blue Stage and the Family Pavilion at Navy Pier. Also, in celebration of Navy Pier's 10th anniversary, which also coincides with this week, Navy Pier will charge only 10 cents for rides on the famous Ferris Wheel on Tuesday.
Then on Thursday, the 14th the Chicago Children's Museum will have free admission from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
From 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, there will be many wandering magicians as well as magical storytellers in the Crystal Gardens, performing tricks and telling stories to patrons as they walk on the Pier. A competition of local amateur magicians from Chicago and its suburbs on Thursday night will round out the events that evening.
The events this week correspond with the release of the new book in the Harry Potter series, "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince," which will be available at the Barbara's Bookstore's Navy Pier location at midnight on Friday. The Navy Pier IMAX theater will also premiere Tim Burton's long awaited remake of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," starring Johnny Depp.
On Saturday, July 16, the Pier will celebrate it's 10th anniversary summer with an extended fireworks show with music at 10:15 p.m.
Navy Pier is accessible by the #65 Grand bus, or the #121 Union/Wacker Express bus. The Pier is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 10 a.m. to 12 midnight Friday and Saturday. Most of the events of the week are free, and more information can be found at www.navypier.com.
