UIC recently won the Prix d'Excellence award for its architectural development and positive impact to the surrounding areas.

For its innovative real estate development over the past several years, UIC has recently been awarded the Prix d'Excellence award from the International Real Estate Federation.

The International Real Estate Federation houses its headquarters in Paris, and consists of 110 national associations, with more than 1.5 million members professionaly working in real estate.

Previous Chicago recipients of this prestigious award have included such architectural and destination spots like Millennium Park.

The Prix d' Excellence is given to worldwide developments which have proven to excel in architecture and technical originality, significant contributions to the surrounding community, and an established positive environmental impact.

The development of the east campus has been the driving force in this recent honor, and the award has recognized UIC's expansion and development from the early stages of campus planning in the mid-1950s up until the present.

"We won for the whole campus, which is unique, because it did something powerful through 50 years of thoughtful planning," said Warren Chapman, UIC vice chancellor for external affairs. "Its placement at the expressway crossroads made it an anchor for the redevelopment of the Near West Side."

UIC was discussed by the federation as an institution which has made education affordable, while still maintaining a design that is environmentally friendly and abundant with retail and housing structures, as well as several outlets for public events.

According to the federation, "The presence of the University of Illinois at Chicago strengthened Chicago's economic engine, brought new life to a dilapidated community, attracted additional development and became a catalyst for social change."

The award fits nicely into a time when Chancellor Sylvia Manning has announced her retirement and is being recognized as one of the key players in UIC's most recent urban and real estate development, as well as educational excellence.

UIC's Great Cities Commitment has also certainly contributed to its status as one of the most innovative and progressive college campuses across the world.

The Great Cities Commitment has gained momentum in recent months, and consists of UIC faculty, students and staff who make valuable connections with the community, corporations, foundations and government partners in order to move toward a better quality of life in cities all over the world.
