Lawndale High School students drown in Fox River
Three Lawndale College Prep High School students drowned while on retreat late last week.
The bodies of the three teens, who were identified as Melvin Choice, 17, Jimmie Avant, 18, and Adrian Jones, 16 by the McHenry County coroner's office, were recovered on Friday, November 14 at 11:15.
The students were on an eight-day retreat located at a McHenry County YMCA, when two students took a boat onto the Fox River at approximately 2 a.m.
The third drowned in the 42 degree water while trying to rescue the his classmates. The boat sank due to a plug which had been removed from the bottom of the boat to allow water to drain during the winter to prevent it from freezing.
Sgt. Brett Scroggins of the Illinois Department of Natural Resource Conservation Police said that six of the seven paddle boats found at campsite were launched overnight.
Authorities do not suspect any foul play.
