Tina Salerno, owner of the Paul Mitchell School located at 1225 South Halsted, has been in the beauty business for twelve years. Given her experience, she is very knowledgeable about hairstyle trends and has great tips. She was kind enough to share her expertise and answer a few questions for me.
Flame: Could you describe what styles are "in" for this fall?
Tina Salerno: You'll see a lot of long sexy hair and fringe, which is a nicer way of saying "bangs." A lot of volume is back in, and dimension in color- meaning variations of reds, coppers, browns, and honey tones.
Flame: Do you have any product recommendations for poor college students?
TS: The Paul Mitchell line is consumer friendly and the average price is 8-16 dollars. What I love for this time of year is the Instant Moisture (Paul Mitchell) for hydration, which is a shampoo and conditioner. Style Fast Form Cream Gel (Paul Mitchell) is a versatile styling product, it's great for all textures of hair and helps bring out volume and softness.
Flame: Is there anything especially important to remember when straightening your hair?
TS: Always make sure you protect hair before using a blow dryer or flat iron. If the hair isn't protected, we compare it to going in the sun without sunscreen-you'll burn. The thermal protectant Hot Off the Press (Paul Mitchell) makes sure the hair stays in good condition, and the great thing about it is that it's used on dry hair-so even if you don't shampoo that day, you can use it. We recommend shampooing every other day.
Flame: When you go to the Paul Mitchell salon, you can choose from "phase 1" or "phase 2," can you explain what that means?
TS: Phase 1 is for the students who are new and starting out. Phase 2 is the honors program. It's something the students can aspire to, but they don't have to do. Phase 2 students have a little more knowledge, and they are treated more like a stylist in a salon. They're allowed to be a little more creative. Since phase two is an honors program, you have to go through an intensive interview process to get in.
Flame: Do you have any tips/product recommendations for managing frizzy/curly hair?
TS: What I highly recommend for someone with curly hair is Super Skinny Serum (Paul Mitchell). It's made of nutrients and protein so it gets into the cuticle of the hair and smooths from the inside out. It pushes water out, allowing the hair to dry a little quicker and smoother. A lot of other straightening products are silicone based, which means they just lie on the top of the hair-they don't get into the hair-shaft. Whereas these products smooth from the inside out since they have nutrients and protein.
I thanked Tina for sharing valuable information about trends and haircare. We've learned some of the technology behind these products as well as what products to use during the dry months which won't break the bank. Tina has demonstrated that the Paul Mitchell Line offers products at reasonable prices to keep your hair healthy and to prevent your hair from becoming fried from those flat irons.

Thanks for the trends and tips. I just got my hair cut and colored. This is the first time I ever wore a "full" bang. I was a little nervous when I saw how my stylist was going to create my full bang. (Continued…)
